Elon Musk acquires Twitter: In addition to innocent remarks, Elon Musk’s habit of using banned substances is said to be the reason why Tesla’s board of directors is “holding fire”.
Elon Musk often defends impulsive behavior or provocative remarks as a sign of declining creative thinking or mental health, stress meltdowns and lack of sleep.
In recent years, however, people close to the billionaire have raised concerns about a key reason for his erratic behavior. This is doping.
A headache for executives under Musk
People around Musk have become accustomed to his erratic behavior. However, several SpaceX executives who had worked with him over the years noticed a clear change at an event in late 2017.
At a recent rocket conference, hundreds of SpaceX employees gathered at the Hawthorne, Calif., headquarters to wait for Musk to arrive an hour late. When Elon Musk walked on stage, he started stammering and gibbering for 15 minutes. He also repeatedly called SpaceX’s Big Falcon rocket the “Big F*cking Rocket.”
By 2018, signs of drug use emerged in another incident, affecting Musk’s business activities. The billionaire appeared on Joe Rogan’s podcast and smoked marijuana on air. As a result, SpaceX’s CEO and the entire company were subject to regular and unexpected drug testing by the government for a year straight.
Substance abuse has been a painful subject for directors under Musk, according to people familiar with the matter. Many of them are close friends and often attend parties and travel with him.
Elon Musk is famous for his appearances at the Burning Man music festival in Nevada. This is where medications are often used. He also hosted private events where drug use was common, according to partygoers.
Kimbal Musk’s brother also participated in a similar wild night. At Art Basel Miami in late 2021, two people used ketamine recreationally. Kimbal Musk has also spoken to friends about the benefits of psychedelics and advocated for their use in mental health treatments.
In 2023, the Wall Street Journal reported that Elon Musk injected small amounts of ketamine to treat depression and used it at many parties. After the article was published, Musk said on social network X that ketamine is an effective way to deal with depression. He claims it’s better than prescription antidepressants and can “change” people.
Talking more about the issue, Musk said his doctor prescribed him ketamine. This hallucinogen-like drug can be used to treat depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is also commonly used at parties and can be purchased illegally through dealers.
